Platform Tennis at Lafayette #1 - The court is quite a bit smaller than a tennis court which means your backswing needs to shorten. Generally, the longer the backswing, the greater the chance of error. Your backswing should roughly be half the length of your tennis swing. This is an important tip to remember especially if you are the team playing the net (which, by the way, you want to be.) Did you know for every 10 balls that are going out, the average team at the net will play seven of them!!! Notice a player’s backswing to help improve your quick judgement calls and remember the adage, “Shoulder High Let It Fly.” #2 - Use your backhand volley!!! The backhand volley has a natural range from left to right. In platform, you are much closer to your opponent and do not have the time to make the move to hit a forehand volley. Learn to slide your paddle across your body and trust your backhand. #3 - Play with patience. In platform tennis, partly due to the small size of the court, most balls are retrievable. Therefore, you will win most points on your opponent’s errors. You will not be able to hit the winners you can in tennis. I attended a platform tennis clinic at Woodhill last year which included an exhibition match of nationally ranked players. The first point of the match lasted 8 minutes!! They played steady and smart and they also played the ball off the wires in almost every exchange!! Now that is a challenge! Did you know that one hour of platform tennis burns 350 calories?! |
